“Scripting the Truth” by T.A. Henry: A Woman Takes Control of Her Destiny After WWII

What lengths would you go through to find and claim the love of your life? Would you walk the iconic 500 miles? Would you throw yourself into a setting and profession you have zero experience in just to be near him/her? The second option is exactly what our heroine does in this amazing romantic historical fiction.

I’ve been wanting to share this book ever since I picked it up after meeting the author last October. With Memorial Day right around the corner, what better time, right? I’ll link all the pertinent info below, but the premise is: A wartime nurse fell in love with one of her patients, but of course they were separated before anything could develop. Back home after the war, it turns out said patient is a movie star. Desperate to reconnect, she takes on script writing as her only hope of getting near him. The question? After all that, is he worth it?

This Book Strikes a Chord

There were two things that drew me to this book automatically: 1. I’m also an ex-army nurse (sadly, no romance on the ward for me), so I loved the snippets of military life woven in from the main character’s perspective, and 2. The format of this book is so darn creative! The flashbacks aren’t your typical flashbacks. The book is one part traditional novel and one part you reading the main character’s screenplay, wherein she uses her own experiences to set the scene. Why I thought this was so amazingly brilliant, I don’t really know, except that it made things interesting and kept me turning the pages. Or, it could have been the fact that the author also has a background in screenwriting, so we literally get that aspect of her in this book! I love stuff like that 🙂

Beautifully Written/Memorable Characters

Aside from the interesting format and premise, this book is very well written with engaging dialog and setting descriptions that build the world up around you until you’re totally ensconced.

The cast of characters is diverse and entertaining, with every one of them well rounded. I felt as empathetic and in tune with the butler as I did with our heroine.

Not Your Typical Romance

I do have to say, this is not a romance in the strict sense. This is a work of historical fiction with a driving romantic plot. The main character’s obsession with the man she’s fallen for fuels her actions, but true to life, other options crop up. I spent the book rooting for several of the male characters to win her over, but she had tunnel vision. That said, she definitely gets her happily ever after, so never fear on that front.

I would recommend this read to anyone and everyone who has a soft spot in their heart for fated love and are willing to go to any lengths to prove their devotion. The steam level is on the sweet side, so I’d say it’s appropriate for any reader, and is definitely a great book to pick up in honor of our greatest generation!
